Quick answer

Business lenders commonly ask for an ATO statement of account, lodgement history and any payment plan details. You or your tax agent can usually download these from the ATO's online services in minutes. Lenders look at the balance, whether lodgements are up to date, any payment arrangement and whether it is being met.

Key points

  • An ATO statement of account answers most tax questions
  • Lodgement status matters as much as the balance
  • Payment plans that are being met help
  • Your tax agent can download records quickly

When a business owes the ATO, or a lender wants to confirm it does not, the fastest evidence comes straight from the ATO’s own systems. Knowing which records matter and how to get them in minutes can save a day of back and forth.

The records lenders ask for

Record What it shows
Statement of account Current balance, what it relates to and recent transactions
Lodgement history Whether BAS and tax returns are up to date
Payment plan details Any arrangement, its instalments and whether it is current
Correspondence Warning letters, notices or director penalty notices

How to get them quickly

Business owners with access to the ATO’s online services for business can view and download account statements and payment details. If your tax agent manages your account, ask them to download the statement of account and confirm lodgement status. Most tax agents can do this in minutes if you explain the deadline.

Every hour counts when a payment is due. Lodge a quick enquiry so the assessment can start straight away.

Hour by hour, roughly

Stage Typical timing What speeds it up
Enquiry About 60 seconds Accurate figures for amount and revenue
First call Minutes, in business hours Answering an unknown number
Approval As fast as 15 minutes, commonly within the hour Statements via a secure bank link
Signing Same day Directors and guarantors on standby
Funds Within 24 hours possible Payee details ready, including the ATO or supplier

What lenders look for

  • The balance: how large it is relative to the business.
  • Lodgements: whether everything is lodged, even if not paid.
  • Trend: whether the balance is growing or shrinking.
  • Arrangements: whether a payment plan exists and is being met.
  • Action: whether the ATO has escalated, for example through director penalty notices.

Lodged-but-unpaid looks very different from unlodged. A business that keeps lodging on time while working through a balance is engaging with its obligations. A business that has stopped lodging raises bigger questions.

Paying the ATO from the loan

Where a loan is clearing a tax debt, the lender will often pay the ATO directly at settlement using your payment reference. Have the reference ready and check the statement of account a few days later to confirm the payment was allocated correctly.

The GIC and why speed matters

The ATO’s general interest charge accrues on overdue amounts, and from 1 July 2025 it is no longer tax deductible. That makes carrying a tax debt more expensive than before, and adds weight to clearing it quickly when that is the right decision for the business.

A worked example (illustrative)

A transport company’s director is asked for its tax position on the first call. Instead of guessing, she calls her tax agent, who downloads the statement of account and confirms all BAS are lodged. The statement shows a balance of about $58,000 on a payment plan that has missed two instalments. With that in hand, the assessor approves within the hour, including funds to clear the ATO.

Keeping your tax position loan-ready

Lodge on time even when you cannot pay in full. Keep payment plans current or renegotiate them before they default. Move GST and PAYG withholding into a separate account as you collect them. These habits make every future funding conversation faster.

Who can see your ATO account

Your ATO account is private. Lenders only see what you or your tax agent choose to share, usually a downloaded statement. Never share your myGov or online services login details with anyone, including a lender; a genuine lender will only ask for the documents themselves.

Super records too

With payday super from 1 July 2026, lenders may also ask whether super is being paid on time. Unpaid super can lead to the super guarantee charge and, for companies, director exposure. Your payroll system and clearing house records show contributions and dates, so have a recent summary ready alongside your ATO statement.

Documents that speed things up

Most delays come from documents that are not ready when they are asked for. Line these up before you enquire:

  • ATO statement of account
  • Confirmation of lodgement status
  • Payment plan details and recent instalments
  • Any ATO letters or notices
  • Your payment reference number

What can slow it down

Watch for these common speed bumps:

  • Guessing the balance instead of checking
  • Outstanding lodgements
  • Payment plans that have quietly defaulted
  • Tax agents not told about the deadline

Where to go from here

Terms used in this guide

  • General interest charge (GIC): the ATO’s interest on overdue tax. From 1 July 2025 it is no longer tax deductible.
  • Payday super: from 1 July 2026, super must reach employees’ funds within 7 business days after payday.
  • Settlement: the moment a loan is funded and any security registered, or a property changes hands.
  • Unsecured loan: a loan without property security, sized mainly on turnover and bank statements.
  • Default: a credit file listing showing an overdue debt was reported by a creditor.

Five questions to ask any fast lender

  • What are the conditions on this approval, and which are still outstanding?
  • What is the repayment schedule in dollars, not percentages?
  • Can I pay it out early without a penalty?
  • Who do I call if something changes during the term?
  • Is there anything in the documents you would point out to me?

Get the form right, get funded faster

Think of the enquiry form as the brief for your loan. The clearer the brief, the faster the work. Give the amount you actually need, the revenue your statements will show, an honest credit picture and whether property is available. That lets a real person match you to the right option on the first attempt instead of the third.

In a nutshell

  • An ATO statement of account answers most tax questions
  • Lodgement status matters as much as the balance
  • Payment plans that are being met help
  • Your tax agent can download records quickly

Why this can move in hours, not weeks

The clock starts when you submit the enquiry. In business hours a real person usually picks it up within minutes, checks the amount and purpose and asks for what is needed. For unsecured funding that is mostly bank statements. For property-secured funding it is the property details, with no valuation required. From there, approval can be given in as little as 15 minutes and is commonly given within the hour. E-signing and payment follow, and funds within 24 hours is a realistic target when everything is ready.

Find out how fast you could be funded

The enquiry takes about 60 seconds and there is no credit check when you first enquire. Your details stay with one team rather than being sprayed out to a dozen lenders, and a real person works out what fits. Please answer the form accurately, especially the amount, revenue and whether you own property, because that is what lets us match you properly the first time. Start your enquiry here.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get an ATO statement of account?

From the ATO's online services for business, or through your registered tax agent.

Why do lenders want ATO records?

Tax debts can affect a business's cash flow and creditors, so lenders want to understand the full picture.

Will owing the ATO stop a loan?

Not automatically. Tax debt is considered case by case, and loans can pay the ATO directly.

What if lodgements are behind?

Lodge what you can. Unlodged returns make the real balance unclear and slow things down.
