How the gap is worked out

The calculator starts with the cash you hold today, adds each week's money in, takes away each week's money out and tracks the running balance. The lowest balance across the eight weeks is the true size of the problem. If it dips below zero, that shortfall plus your chosen buffer is the amount worth funding. If it never dips, you may not need to borrow at all, and that is a great result.

Why the lowest week matters more than the average

Averages hide cash flow problems. A business can take in more than it spends across two months and still bounce a payroll in week two, because the big customer pays in week five. Lenders and owners who look only at monthly totals miss the squeeze. Looking week by week shows exactly when the pinch lands, which tells you how fast the money needs to arrive and how long you need it for.

Turning the result into the right funding

  • One dip that recovers: a short-term loan sized to the gap plus buffer, repaid as the recovery lands. See fast short-term business loans.
  • Several dips through the period: a line of credit you draw only when needed. See the fast line of credit page.
  • Gap caused by slow payers: consider whether invoice finance would release the money already owed to you.

If week one or two is already negative, speed matters. Run the funding speed checker, then start your 60-second enquiry. There is no credit check to enquire, and a real person will look at it quickly.

Questions about this tool

Why eight weeks and not twelve months?

Urgent funding decisions are about the next few weeks. Eight weeks is long enough to catch a payroll cycle, a BAS payment and a slow-paying customer, and short enough that your numbers will be reasonably accurate.

What should I include as money in?

Only money you are confident will land in that week: card settlements, customer payments that are genuinely due, and any other receipts. Leave out invoices that are already overdue unless you have a firm payment date.

How much buffer should I add on top of the gap?

Many owners add 10 to 20 per cent of the gap to cover surprises, but it depends on how predictable your takings are. The calculator lets you choose the buffer so you can see the effect.

What kind of funding suits a cash flow gap?

A one-off gap that closes when a known payment arrives often suits a short-term loan. Gaps that keep coming back suit a line of credit you can draw and repay. Gaps caused by unpaid invoices may suit invoice finance.
